Chinese 3G Standard Has Poor Showing in Recent Tests
June 24, 2005
According to the newspaper China Daily, China's standard for 3G mobile telephones, TD-SCDMA, did not demonstrate very good performance in recent testing. During the tests, chips for the TD-SCDMA standard were able to make calls and send short text messages, but were not so successful in supporting typical 3G applications, such as sending multimedia messages, making video calls, and downloading music. Expectations for interoperability between different terminals were also not met. Tests for the TD-SCDMA standard are being performed by the China Academy of Telecommunications Research, which belongs to the Ministry of Information Industry. The academy declined to comment on the reports.
